Restaurant guide Zomato has acquired MaplePOS, a cloud-based point of sale system for an undisclosed amount.
The four-year-old startup has developed a point of sale device with features such as menu and inventory management, and has a built-in payment solution to accept debit and credit card payments.
Last year, Zomato launched an app for restaurant owners to update their menus, pictures, details, and special offers in real time. With this acquisition, Zomato moves a step forward in providing business-focused solutions for restaurants.
“There is a lot that can be done if we are able to build a technology platform that connects consumers to restaurants and vice versa. A world-class cloud-based POS system is the first step towards building that platform,” Deepinder Goyal, founder and CEO of Zomato, said.
Post acquisition, MaplePOS will be renamed as Zomato Base. The company will work on integrating the POS product’s services with the consumer product over the next few months. After the integration, the service will be offered to restaurant businesses across the world.
Zomato has recently raised US$50 million in a fresh round of funding from existing investor Info Edge, a publicly listed online classifieds firm, among others.
This is the first product acquisition for Zomato. In the past year, it has acquired seven service-focused companies in various parts of the world to extend its reach to 22 countries in the restaurant search space. The biggest among them was the acquisition of Urbanspoon, which gave the company a dominant position in Australia, Canada, and the United States.
Besides regional expansion, the firm has also been making vertical expansions. It is currently working on transforming into an online food ordering site.
